Hello, I am Aleah Michele Ford, the artist behind Moth On The Wall. My work centers around the Lepidoptera family of moths and butterflies, and stems from a deep lifelong curiosity in the natural world. I use textiles to create realistic, larger-than-life moths, butterflies, and bees; along with the occasional mythical creature.
The sculptures I create are based on real insects from around the world. I work from my small entomology collection as reference, along with photographs that I have taken while studying educational collections (including the Yale Peabody entomology collection).
I wish I could tell you that I was a bug obsessed child, but the truth is my interest in Entomology developed as a young adult. Growing up, my love of nature was hand-in-hand with my interest in fantasy. Nature was space for make-believe. A fallen tree could become a ship wreck for a mermaid to swim through, and a crumbing well-house could become the portal between our world and the faerie realm. As I got older, I began to look at the real fae that fill our gardens and wildflower fields: moths and butterflies.
I received a bachelors and masters in Art Education and a Masters of Fine Art. The focus of my studies was in photography and technical theatre (props and costume). I have experience teaching art for k-3 and 7-12. I have also taught intro and intermediate photography courses at the University level.
